Driving along Virginia’s beautiful I-81 interstate and arriving at the historic ‘Shot Tower’, we were intrigued to learn about a nearby winery. After a short drive through the lush hillside, we were greeted by West Wind’s enthusiastic vintner in a lovely setting. Found here are a cross section of mainly sweet and a few dry wines. How much fun to find an impressionable and true to taste, fruit forward yet dry Riesling. Though many listed wines were already sold out late in the summer season, we were able to also try their unique Cabernet Sauvignon/Chambourcin blend. Housed next to an abandoned 1840s farm house where the current owner’s great, great grandfather lived, this winery has a small tasting bar, an impressive gift shop and even a remote covered ‘patio’, as the owner describes this gazebo-like structure, to sit peacefully on your own enjoying West Wind’s offerings. For those biking the 57-mile New River Rails-to-Trail bike path between Pulaski and Galax , VA or staying at the Inn at Foster Falls, this is a great venture opportunity.

Favorite Wine: White - Galena Creek White [2007]; Red - Cabernet Sauvignon [2006]; Fruit - Galena Creek Blackberry

During some down time on a business trip to Dublin, VA I was in my hotel room and got on Catch Wine to see if there were any vineyards / wineries close by. It turned out that West Wind Farm Vineyard & Winery was so a business companion and I decided to stop by. David Manley [Owner] treated us to a free tasting of all there wines. He was [is] a very friendly host and his wines were outstanding. As it turned out the winery was have a wine dinner that evening and David had [2] tickets for this dinner available and offered them to us which we gladly accepted. The dinner was fantastic! The food and the wine pairings were wonderful and the atmosphere was truly grand. If you are in the area and have a bit of time do yourself a favour and go and visit David and West Wind Farm Vineyard & Winery, you will not be dissappointed. Don Schellenberg
