Favorite Wine: Petit Verdot
Oh my, where to begin. It was all great. On this day, Julian, the winemaker, was our most gracious and passionate host. We could have talked to Julian for hours. Then there is the simple and breathtaking beauty of the site and the journey to get there. Is there any better place for Fall colors? And then the wine. We liked the reds here a lot. The Petit Verdot was excellent. It is a five star for me. The C'est Trop is an excellent port. Every year we share a bottle (or two) of Port with my extended family as a Christmas Holiday Meal tradition. I don't know if I can share this one. Julian has a Triskele blend and also a Norton in the barrels right now. Got to taste these ahead of release. They look very promising as is the future at Ducard.

Favorite Wine: 2nd Corps white and rose'
Beautiful grounds and liked the tasting room. Wines were very good. Gibson Hollow White, Rose, Popham Run Red and the 2nd Corps Civil War bottle wine were all favorites. We had lunch on the patio and it was gorgeous looking out to the mountain. No vines to see from there. Scott is very sweet and personable. Only drawback was the tasting took a very long time. The woman pouring had three groups of us all on different wines. Will go back.

Norton Wine Review: I'm betting that DuCard Vineyards will become a Virginia Wines point-of-interest for many, many wine travelers in the years to come being tucked neatly in a scenic roads Shenandoah mountains valley 45 minutes off I-81. Though only a few offerings at this time which evidently sells out very quickly each year, we were so lucky to hook up with Scott Elliff in his busy schedule as he works to finish the new on-site tasting and sales facility scheduled to open in late May, 2010. How wonderful it was having him showing us variations of vine pruning in his vineyards. The ride alone into the beautiful Virginia’s Madison County area is simply one part of the journey followed by a superb 2007 Norton. DuCard’s description lists this wine as an ‘intense and inky-black wine with distinctive aromas’. This wording accurately describes a wonderful Norton which we discovered on this trip. Unique to this vineyard is Scott Elliff’s participation with a nearby technical college in which students “adopt†a row of grapes. What an experience he is presenting locally with his community viticulture teaching and work participation.
