Favorite Wine: Serenade
We visited the winery for an afternoon with our friends who moved from VA. I was greeted at the door and happily surprised to see that they do not charge for a tour and tasting. The tour was very informative and it was fun to see them bottling the wine. The wine tasting was fun and extensive and given by the owner (He was very nice!). I didn’t think I would like sweet wines, but they changed my mind. We purchased wine for our trip back north to share.

Didn't mean to stop in- but the wife thought the billboards were cute and we needed to stop for lunch before a late afternoon check in in Wilmington. Definitely loved the southern hospitality- the minute we walked int eh door we were treated like royaly- offered a free tour and wine tasting. I have never been anywhere where we had not been overcharged for something! Fantastic tour and wine tasting. Never had a Muscadine wine before- but really liked it! Took a few cases on to the beach and will stop again for another great lunch and to restock on the way home. Thanks guys.

My visit to Duplin was lackluster, to say the least. When I walked in, there was no one at the bar to taste, however, I was told that I would join the next tour in a mass tasting. Clever, gimmick, really. In the 45 minutes I had to wait to taste the wine, all I could do was mill around their expansive gift shop filled with t-shirts, dips and such, wine accessories and….shoes? Yes, shoes…at a winery gift shop. Makes total sense. During the tasting, no one-on-one service was provided. There was one man yelling so everyone could hear him and several workers constantly pouring a new taste. Maybe it’s a tactic so that you didn’t dwell on the wine’s taste too much. They made outrageous claims such as having, exclusively, the “healthiest grape grown anywhere.†Mistakenly, we decided to eat in the café that was covered in fake ivy and had random lattice on wheels as dividers around the room. The food was less than mediocre, lacking taste and had obviously not been prepared with fresh ingredients. Overall, it was a disappointing and frustrating experience. I’m not sure how this could possibly be the #1 winery in the Southeast. I can think of at least 5 other NC vineyards that top it not only in atmosphere, but definitely in taste and most certainly in class.

Favorite Wine: The Water at lunch!
Wow is this a loaded bag! I hate to put down the largest winery in the South East US, however....... I have never been yelled at before in all my life! First off we get there, the bar is empty, they tell us it will be 20-30 minutes before we can taste, we have to wait for the group... 45-60min later we get caught up in the wave of tourists that just came back form the off-site tour. We were packed in at the bar like cattle(yet again) and then 1 man for 30-40 people starts yelling at us and telling us why Duplin Winery is the best thing created besides fire! Im all for being proud, but watered down niagra, concord, catawba grape juice does not a (coastal james grape make!) Anyway, during the onslot of verbal abuse we were taking, we were never given the oppertunity to ask questions, comment, or react as soon as the first 1oz was pourd and consumed the topic was dropped and you were moved on to the 2nd so on and so forth till all the weak, over corn syruped tonics blended together. At that point to add insult to injury, we were told by our server in the bistro; when one of us didnt eat her lasagna because it was tastless and watery, that we were wrong and they were right! Enough Said! well...... Burgundy is a region in France, it should not have to be slapped on a bottle of (Carolina) "Muscadine Wine!"

Amazing winery. The people are very friendly, very informative, obviously proud of what they have accomplished. The wines are wonderful. I could stay there all day long. You can tour the winery, do a wine tasting, and have lunch/dinner at the Bistro. Lots of shopping. They have a lot of their own products: jelly, salsa, spreads, dressings ... It smells great just walking through the door. Awesome.
