Favorite Wine: Norton
Norton Wine Review: So many choices of reds, whites, rose, port, sparkling, or dessert wines which will accommodate all tastes. Stone Hill Vineyards year in and year out provides true award winning wines. Though they have a prominent gift store you have to pass through to get to the tasting rooms, you never feel like you are being pushed through a bad tourist trap. After experiencing a Stone Hill tower Norton tasting of wines from 2007-2016 and selecting, for my taste, the 2015 as the wine to wait for, I was able to pick up recently a couple cases of this Missouri Governor’s Cup winner (Stone Hill’s 2016 Norton was this year’s winner also). I will age in bottle this for six-to-eight more years or longer if possible. Hopefully, this will go down as a ‘classic’ Norton wine. If you want to know what Norton wines are all about, visit Stone Hill Winery. Beautiful location with parking atop a knoll in the town of Hermann. Enjoy this historic scene, restaurant and the best of what Missouri can offer in the way of wines. For those traveling by RV, there is a city park with full hookups at the foot of the hill which makes traveling through this section of Missouri very manageable.

Favorite Wine: Vignoles
This is the best winery in town, though perhaps others have different wines that are better. The best thing there is the cellar tours - make sure you do it! Every wine that they offer is quality. My only regret is that we were not able to sample the Cross J Norton, however I have a bottle of that in the cellar that I hope will give me a good night in the future.

Favorite Wine: 2001 Norton
Been Coming to Stone Hill for years. This latest visit was to partake in their Norton Vertical Tasting. Maybe the top wine experience of our lives was had. We started off with hor d'ouvres with champagne style Blanc de Blanc and Brut Rose in the Apostle Cellars. Then we proceeded to the vertical tasting with vintages stepping up year-by-year from 2002 through 2011. Oh the Aged Nortons were so good. We liked the 2002, 2005, 2007, and 2009 the best. Not all for the same reasons though. The 2011 was off to a very good start and seems it will be very good in the years to come. The favorite by vote of all the guests was the 2005. Then we were off to a three course meal. The main entree of a bison filet was unbelievably good. The first course was paired with a dry Vignoles. The bison was paired with a 2001 Norton which has been my favorite for some time. It didn't disappoint. By the time we got to the dessert with a Norton Port, we'll I was at my limit. I sometimes note the negative reviews of the Stone Hill wines. My guess is that if you like sweet white wines from other Missouri winemakers, you will note that Stone Hils whites are different. As such, we didn't care for the Blanc de Blanc or the Vignoles. The Norton however was to die for. Stone Hill to us is in our top three in the U.S. for quality aged Norton. And since it was Stone Hill that first introduced us to this grape, we will remain always endeared to it. The evening was great from start to finish including the opportunity to speak with the Held family. If you ever get a chance to do this dinner, do it.

Favorite Wine: Stone Hill Concord American Sweet Concord Wine
Very often, people rated wines or vineyards in the Midwest region as so-so because there weren't many information or people talking about wines from the heartland. In my opinion, wines from the midwest are diamonds in the rough. I last visted Stone Hill winery back in summer of 2009. I remembered being very excited about this trip because it was my first visit to any vineyard or winery in my whole life! Stone Hill has a history dating back to the 1800s and is considered one of the pionner vineyards. They had have produced a number of award-winning wines. If you have the chance to visit, you will not be disappointed. Beautiful surrouding and the wine tour were pretty impressive. Also, Hermann is a nice small town that still retained some old German tradition. Check out the local restaurants and festivals
