Norton Wine Review: Wandering the back streets of tiny Weston, MO you'll find the operations of Pirtle Winery in an original 1867 Evangelical Lutheran Church. Limited parking, especially for larger vehicles and limited handicap access to the tasting room because of a long flight of steep stairs (wine patio is easily accessed from the street). Offered are a few grape, fruit and mead wines. Be aware that not all wines are from local or Missouri grapes. Their 2014 Norton ($17) was, supposedly, a Governor's Cup Gold Medal winner which had been aged six months in American oak and then six months in French oak. We found this Norton thin, green and immature. Were we substituted tiny sips of wine from our very quirky hostess who was more attuned to being full of laughter (and generous tasting pours) with a young couple at the end of the bar? Though interesting, their $18 Alhambra (St. Vincent/Norton blend) did not temp us with a purchase.

Favorite Wine: Cherry
Beautiful old Church building! Very nice staff. They have a lovely seating area outside to relax, enjoy some wine, and snack on cheese and crackers.

Favorite Wine: 2010 Norton
A fantastic, thriving downtown, and a great location. It's not their fault that the place was a veritable zoo when I visited on a fall Saturday. The staff were overwhelmed by visitors to the winery. I very quickly tasted the Norton and left, empty handed, because while the wine was nice, it was too much--too crowded, too fast of an experience, and too small a pour to really get the true colors of the wine. They offer a wide variety of wines that are clearly very well made, and the setting is incredibly intimate and nice. Many people are attracted to this winery for good reason.

Favorite Wine: Concord
Have visited Pirtle several times while taking day trips to Weston. It's unique due to being in an old building that was once a church. They have quite a variety of wines and meads which my dad liked and purchased. My fave was probably the sweet Concord. They have a nice outside seating area beside the building.

Favorite Wine: Vignoles
We've been coming to this winery for a lot of years and the wines seem to get a little better each year. Way back when our favorite was the Mellow Red which is a sweet Concord. Over the years our tastes have migrated to the dryer wines. The Chambourcin was nice on this last visit. The Norton was sold out so we'll have to wait for another time. The real surprise on this latest visit was their Vignoles. It was very crisp, floral and yet not syrupy sweet and not bitter dry. Perfecto. We are thinking about having our Missouri Wine and Grape Board free tasting for 10 here. The town of Weston is a real treat. The lovely restaurant, The Vineyards, is right across the street, O'Malley's, an Irish bar you have to step inside to appreciate how cool it is, is just a half-block away (if you use the shortcut) as well as other neat shops / restaurants and a distillery to boot. Plenty of neat B&B choices too. Overall the wines are a three with the Vignoles a strong four. Weston as a whole is a 4.

Favorite Wine: Mellow Red
Quaint winery, nice staff. Would like to have tasted the cherry chocolate wine. The steps out front were a surprise, very steep!

Favorite Wine: Mellow Red
The only winery in the area that makes mead. The patio area is beside the building and is very nice and almost secluded. I recommend purchasing a picnic to go along with your bottle

Favorite Wine: Blueberry Wine
One of the few wineries that offer Mead. Pretty good selection, but seems that they have a different selection at Berbiglia liquor store than in their winery. Located in an old church, across the street from a fine cafe, and around the corner from a brewery on a historic Weston street.
