Norton Wine Review: This was our third pass to this winery situated along I-70 with its beautiful restaurant perched on a 15 acre bluff over looking the mighty Missouri River. The first two visits included wine tastings at the restaurant, but this time was our first experience at their rather new separate, expanded tasting room facility. Six free tastings are offered from their menu of twenty wines, but more samples are available for a fee. Also generous discounts are given for multiple bottle purchases. We appreciated Les Bourgeois' very clean French oaked 2015 Chardonel ($20). We were not up to trying several of their 'California' wines, but did taste their very light non-vintaged 'Jeunette Rouge' (72% Chambourcin w/the balance CA Syrah and Zinfandel) and not ready for the public, $25 2015 100% Noiret (Cornell University 2006 American-French hybrid release). The 2013 Premium Claret American oaked Norton ($25) was sadly very plain and lacked body. This Les Bourgeois Norton wine just missed the boat compared to other fine Missouri Norton wines. Maybe next year.

wine tasting was great and the setting looking over the river was great. Their Concord wine is a fantastic wine while relaxing above the river.

Les Bourgeois is hands down the most picturesque of all the wineries I have visited in MO and KS. The Blufftop Bistro is beautifully set on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River. And the building is beautiful as well. Unfortunately I didn't do any wine tasting due to going there for a Mother's Day brunch. The food was great though! Hope to visit again soon to taste their wine.

Favorite Wine: riverboat red, concord grape, triminette vignoles
Great view, winery just OK, didnt realize this was the wine we bought at the grocery store till we walked in for tasting. Riverboat Red is our favorite...much cheaper at the grocery store.

From other reviews I came here expecting the wines to be so-so. And in general that was our experience. However, from the winery’s website I did expect to be a little more wowed by the buildings, ambience and grounds. First it was a little peculiar to us that the Bistro and the A-frame were at different locations on the river bluff site and then the tasting room was back at the interstate at a different site altogether. On our way off the interstate, we opted to come back to the tasting room if there were no offerings at the other location. (There weren’t as far as we could tell.) We arrived in the middle of the afternoon in mid-August. Although it was not very hot (especially for August), I suspect everything would have been nicer with fall colors and if it was about 10 degrees cooler. But everything seemed void of any real character to us. The wines were okay but nothing stellar here and many of them were $25 a bottle. Although we didn’t choose to buy any wines here, the ones I liked best were REDS: #1 Chambourcin; #2 American Red (a blend of Zinfandel, Merlot and Syrah) and #3 Norton. WHITES: #1 Solay (a blend of Chardonnel, Vidal Blanc and Vignoles) and #2 2009 Vidal Blanc. My wife (the better half of us) liked the Chambourcin and the Norton.

Rumor around the state says that Les Bourgeois has one of the best winemakers in the state on their staff. Of course, their big seller is a cheap sweet red that all the MU kids drink and that they sell out to other wineries under various river-related names. Not sure why, unless they're sold out of older vintages, but they're serving an 08 or 09 Norton which is just criminal. Way too young to be even considered for drinking. Good food at the restaurant, where I've ordered their 08 Syrah. It is recommended that they invest in better stemware for their wines to be served in the lovely restaurant. Thick rims should be used for coffee, not oaked wines. It's a bike ride from my house, so I'll be back for the food. Hopefully they're socking away some of their Nortons for a few years.
