Norton Wine Review: A fourteen acre family owned vineyard started in 1984, located some 30 minutes west of Kansas City, MO, planted with American and French hybrids. The vineyard sports Chardonel, Seyval, Vignoles, Valvin Muscat, St. Vincent, Chambourcin and Norton grapes. Though, maybe the best of the St. Vincent wines ($15) offered in this area, it still had a twangy, tongue turning offering. The Chambourcin ($15) had been graciously American oaked for 12-15 months, but had not developed any true character on its own. Holy-Field's Cynthiana (Norton) was just too light/bright not revealing the dark complexities which can be found in nearby Missouri Norton examples. These tastes change with each year's production vintages and I would suspect what we sampled may have been the product of several years of tough regional agricultural weather.

Favorite Wine: Chambourcin
The wine here came to me highly recommended and I was not disappointed. The Chambourcin here was among the very best I have tasted. The Norton was in a jammy Cynthiana style. It is a very good representation of that style. I have also heard this style referred to as the Kansas City style. It's not my favorite personally but this one was very, very good again for this style. I would suspect many people will love the Cynthiana here. The Corky's Barrel is a semi-dry blend that's very nice and has a fun sting on the finish. For the whites we liked the Chardonel. It was buttery smooth. The Seyval was nice too again with a nice tart finish. Their Port was nice. We finished up with a Blackberry fruit wine. This Blackberry was the most pure expression of the fruit we have tried in about a dozen different wineries. I liked that it had a bit of fruit tartness on the finish. Nice that it was very fruity without being syrupy. We were impressed by the vineyards. We were happy to buy a case a wine to take home. We will stop again.

Favorite Wine: Vignoles or Late Harvest Vignoles
I went to Holy-Field for the first time recently. I only stayed a short time, just enough to sample a few wines. I found the owner, Michelle, to be quite friendly and really talked to me about the wines and even let me try a couple that they don't usually offer for tasting. They had a nice variety and I had a hard time deciding which to purchase. They have a nice store with gifts, etc. And the house dog was cute too! They have lots of music events and even let the public help pick grapes during harvest!

Went on a Tuesday-it was the only winery in the area open on a Tuesday! Had to climb over the big dog, owner didn't seem like she wanted to serve us. Wines were good when we did get a sample. Probably would not go back.
